Kamala Harris made history in January when she became the first female Vice President of the United States — as well as the first person of color to ever hold that office.
Now as the most high-profile woman in America, it’s no surprise that Vice President Harris’s style is getting a ton of attention. Read on to see how she’s reinventing power dressing.
All Business in All Black

Kamala is most often spotted in suits, both now as Vice President and earlier in her political career.
She tends to gravitate toward dark colors, which give her an air of seriousness and authority — something that’s vital as a woman in a male-dominated environment.
Her suits are always well-tailored and simple, with no fussy details or loud accessories. They allow Kamala herself to take center stage, rather than her clothes.
A monochrome all-black look like this one, from the 2020 Vice Presidential debate, sent a strong message: She used her outfit to acknowledge the seriousness of the event.
Again, no scene-stealing accessories here, just a simple strand of pearls and the ever-present American flag pin.
If you have an important meeting to attend with high-level executives in a corporate environment, you can’t go wrong by emulating this Kamala Harris style.
Cool in Converse

Kamala is famously fond of Converse sneakers and wore them constantly on the campaign trail.
Besides being practical for all that running around, dressing down a suit with a pair of sneakers sends a message of approachability.
Donning Converse instead of impractical stilettos let potential voters know that she was ready to roll up her sleeves and get to work.
Here she paired her low-tops with dark denim, a navy blazer and a black top. Again, mostly dark colors to convey seriousness and authority, while the Converse say “I’m relatable.”
Sneakers paired with a suit or blazer make you look more approachable and friendly, so use that to your advantage — just make sure they’re sleek and clean.
Symbolic in Suffragette White

Kamala is definitely a master of sending a message with her clothing, especially on inauguration night.
For her first speech as the vice president of the United States, she chose a sharp ivory pantsuit with a satin tie-neck blouse.
It looked perfectly patriotic against the red and blue backdrop, but more than that, it was symbolic.
As crazy as it may seem now, wearing pants was once out of the question for women, which is why the pantsuit has become a symbol of powerful women (see: Hillary Clinton).
Wearing white is also a nod to feminism, as worn by the suffragettes who fought for women’s right to vote in the early 20th century.
Overall, Kamala Harris’s outfits express that she’s smart, confident and comfortable that she’s exactly where she belongs.
